BioMed SA will award its eighth Julio Palmaz Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Biosciences to Robert S. Langer on Wednesday.

Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, runs one of the largest research labs at the internationally acclaimed institution.

The award, named after Palmaz Stent inventor Dr. Julio Palmaz, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to advance the health care and bioscience fields. Langer will accept the award at BioMed SA's annual Palmaz Award dinner on Wednesday.

"Dr. Langer has made a profound impact upon the world of medicine," says BioMed SA Chairman Kenneth P. Trevett.

Dr. Bruce Leslie, 2013 Palmaz committee chair and chancellor of Alamo Colleges, says Langer's stature as a "world-famous engineer, medical inventor and entrepreneur makes him a standout choice for this year's award."

"I'm thrilled to receive the Palmaz Award," says Langer.

"Dr. Palmaz and I were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame together in 2006, and I was incredibly impressed with what Julio has done. I'm honored to receive a prize in his name."

Previous Palmaz Award Recipients:
• Dr. Larry Miller;
• Dr. Leroy Hood;
• Dean Kamen;
• Karen Davis, Ph.D;
• Dr. Robert Campbell;
