Dr. Joseph C. Salamone of San Antonio’s Rochal Industries elected to the National Academy of Engineering
February 15, 2011

(SAN ANTONIO) February 15, 2011 - Dr. Joseph C. Salamone, Chief Scientific Officer of Rochal Industries LLP, San Antonio, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), as announced by NAE President Charles M. Vest last week. Dr. Salamone, whose former company commercialized the world's first high oxygen-permeable rigid contact lenses, was elected for his advances in ophthalmological devices and wound healing therapies and for distinguished academic and professional service.

In addition to Dr. Salamone, the Greater San Antonio area is home to four other NAE members: Dr. H. Norman Abramson (retired Executive Vice President, Southwest Research Institute), Mr. Karl J. Springer (retired Vice President, Southwest Research Institute), Dr. Melvin F. Kanninen (Principal, MFK Consulting Services), all from San Antonio, and Dr. Charles R. Cutler (President, Cutler Technology), of Boerne.

With more than 40 products and product lines in eye and wound care sold throughout the world and over 195 US patents (pending and issued), Dr. Salamone's contributions to healthcare produce significant benefit to human welfare. "Dr Salamone is a giant of the biomaterials field. His scientific contributions have had a major impact in the ophthalmological and wound healing areas. His election to the NAE is recognition of his scientific knowledge, ability to use science to produce products, and esteem held by his peers" stated Professor Nicholas Peppas, NAE and Institute of Medicine member and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Texas Austin.

Dr. Salamone is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry/Polymer Science, University of Massachusetts Lowell and an Adjunct Professor, University of Texas San Antonio, Department of Biomedical Engineering. While at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, he served as Professor, Chair of the Chemistry Department and Dean of the College of Science. Concurrently he co-founded Polymer Technology Corporation, which commercialized the world's first high oxygen-permeable rigid contact lenses. This company was sold to Bausch & Lomb where Dr. Salamone consulted for a number years, followed by his leadership as Vice President, Research. In 1986 Dr. Salamone co-founded Rochal Industries, a San Antonio company, which has invented and licensed a number of revolutionary and useful wound care products.

Election to NAE membership by one's peers is one of the highest professional honors accorded an engineer. Members have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as university faculty, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations.

Founded in 1964, the NAE provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The NAE operates under the same congressional act of incorporation that established the National Academy of Sciences, signed in 1863 by President Lincoln. Under this charter, the NAE is directed "whenever called upon by any department or agency of the government, to investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art."

The NAE is a private, independent, nonprofit institution. In addition to its role as advisor to the federal government, the NAE also conducts independent studies to examine important topics in engineering and technology.

The NAE is a member of the National Academies, which includes the NAE, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and the National Research Council (NRC) -- which serves as the principal operating arm of the academies.
