Nearly 300 new jobs add growth to local biosciences industry

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, has selected San Antonio as the site for its new North American professional services headquarters, the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation announced today. BD has plans to hire 296 people at the San Antonio facility with an annual payroll exceeding $12 million.

The company, based in Franklin Lanes, N.J., develops, manufactures and sells medical devices, instrument systems and reagents, and had revenues of $7.2 billion in fiscal year 2009. It plans to invest nearly $6.4 million in the San Antonio facility, which will provide various services, including finance, procurement, human resources, supply chain and customer services for its North American operations.

“BD’s selection of San Antonio adds great momentum to our bioscience sector and the building of a formidable brainpower economy in San Antonio,” said San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro. "Combined with other recent additions to our bioscience sector, BD will be an important element to attract future investment to the city."

BD said that its establishment of the San Antonio site is part of a global strategy to establish four professional services headquarters throughout the world. The three additional professional services headquarters will be located in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Europe.

“We are very pleased to be expanding our operations to include a new facility in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio met all of the criteria that we were seeking in order to meet our business requirements,” said Edward J. Ludwig, BD Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The excellent pool of potential employees and skilled labor along with proximity to academic institutions were significant draws, as well as the support we received from state and local officials. BD looks forward to becoming a good neighbor and a valued corporate citizen in this community, as we are in the other communities in which we operate around the world.”

"San Antonio and Bexar County are now officially on the map for companies such as BD that need a skilled workforce and a community that knows what it takes to help businesses prosper," said County Judge Nelson Wolff. "BD is a well-respected industry leader and I'm thrilled to welcome them here."

The company plans to work with San Antonio educational institutions to develop specific training curricula for this project, including software training (particularly SAP), business process training, and customer service skills training.

“Having a major operation by BD here in San Antonio is a huge addition to our credibility as a medical technology center,” said Kenny Wilson, chair of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation. “Our economic development efforts continue to pay off and pave the way for new opportunities for the people in this region.”

BD continues to gain external recognition around the world in the areas of corporate responsibility, innovation, environment, health and safety, and employer of choice. Recent highlights include:
