Dr. Prusiner is internationally recognized for discovering an unprecedented class of pathogens he named prions. These infectious proteins cause neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. His research focuses on deciphering prions and developing drugs aimed at hindering neurodegeneration in debilitating prion-related diseases that plague the elderly.
